How often do you need to replace your exterior doors?

No matter which exterior door you buy, you want to know it's going to last a long time before it needs replacing. After all, front and rear doors are a big investment. Although door sellers will often provide you with a guarantee, it is possible your door will last longer than this if it's well maintained. To help you decide when you should replace your exterior door, let's look at the different door types and their typical lifespans.

doors

PVC doors

A uPVC exterior door is characterised by its plastic frames. These types of doors generally have quite long lifespans if they're looked after properly and made from quality materials. Immune to rust, rot, flaking and blistering, uPVC stands up well to everyday wear and tear as well as harsh weather. While most sellers advertise a 10-year lifetime for uPVC doors, they will last up to 30 years if they're maintained properly.

Composite door

A composite door is made from a range of materials, including timber, glass and uPVC. This combination means that it's not always easy to provide an accurate lifespan for composite doors. However, as with most doors, if yours is made to a high standard and is looked after, then it has the potential to last for decades. It’s estimated that composite doors need replacing every 30 years.

Aluminium entrance doors

Aluminium doors are typically characterised by their slim frames and their larger glass panes. Strong, corrosion-resistant and durable, they won't peel, rot or flake. They should only need replacing every 45 years, but this can vary depending on how well they’ve been looked after.

Sliding doors

Sliding doors are distinctive from other exterior doors in that instead of opening on a set of hinges, they open across a track. Providing a convenient entryway into your garden, it's unlikely they're used all year round. Like the other doors on this list, they can last around 30 years with regular maintenance.
